Chrome is released through several channels that differ in stability. Canary is built almost daily and can break at any moment, Dev gets weekly builds, Beta receives the version that is being prepared for the stable channel, and Stable is what most people use. The Beta channel is therefore a preview of what will ship soon: new web platform features, interface changes and security improvements are already there, and Google is fixing the remaining bugs. Web developers use it to check that their sites work with the upcoming version, extension authors test compatibility, and curious users simply like to see changes early. Chrome Beta installs as a separate application with its own icon and profile, so it can live next to your regular Chrome without touching its bookmarks or settings. Google publishes articles about what is new for developers on the Chrome for Developers blog.
Beta builds get security fixes quickly, but crashes and broken sites are more likely than in Stable. Do not rely on Beta alone for important work; keep the stable Chrome or another browser as a backup. Download only from google.com, because fake Chrome installers are a known way to spread malware.
Chrome Beta is free.
Give the Beta profile a different theme colour, so you always know which browser you are in. If a site breaks, check it in stable Chrome before reporting a bug to the site owner.
